History

Upper Town (this is the historical name of this area) –this is the beginning of the beginnings of the capital. Here stood the grand duke's palace, defensive ramparts rose, temples, churches and cathedrals were built (the first was the Church of the Tithes , and the grandiose St. Sophia Cathedral, built under Yaroslav the Wise, is still one of the most famous religious buildings in the capital).

This area was called the Upper City, as opposed to Podol – Lower city. If merchants and artisans settled mainly in Podil, then princes and their inner circle lived in the Upper Town. The central gate of the Kiev citadel was the Golden Gate.

Practically the entire Upper Town was destroyed in the 13th century, during the era of the Tatar-Mongol invasion.

The revival of this area dates back to the 19th century. At this time, a new development of the territory near the Golden Gate begins: profitable houses and mansions are being built, and the area is being redevelopment. This territory becomes the administrative center of the capital.

At the beginning of the 20th century. The lower and upper towns were connected by such an unusual type of transport as a funicular.

During the Great Patriotic War, the center of the capital was practically destroyed. In the post-war period, it was rebuilt: in particular, Khreshchatyk was rebuilt in the "Stalin Empire" style.

In the XXI century. a business, cultural and tourist center has been formed here. There are many stunningly beautiful architectural and historical monuments. Infrastructure

There is everything here: majestic temples – for example, Vladimirsky Cathedral or Pokrovsky Monastery, cultural institutions (for example National Opera of Ukraine and National Circus of Ukraine or museums: Central State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art of Ukraine, Literary and Memorial Museum of Taras Shevchenko, Museum of City History , Postal Museum, National Museum of Literature of Ukraine, Museum of Russian Art, Pinchuk Art Museum of Contemporary Art, etc.). It is not by chance that this part of the city is considered a cultural center: in addition to museums and architectural monuments, there are several theaters (for example, the National Academic Theater of Russian Drama named after Lesya Ukrainka, the Kiev Gray Theater, etc.) and galleries (Gallery "Ancient City", Gallery Florentine mosaic, Gamma Gallery, etc.).

Historical center – it is not only cultural institutions, but also a shopping and entertainment area.
